Chester Schools Christian Work (CSCW) is making a real impact in communities across Chester, working in partnership with primary and secondary schools to promote the personal and spiritual development of children and young people.

The charity has been operating since 1994, with the key aims of inspiring hope for today and unlocking potential for tomorrow.

CSCW’s wide ranging work, including prayer sessions, lunch clubs, theatrical plays and much more, sees the charity reach thousands of children and young people in Chester each year.

Darren Gerrish, Team Leader at CSCW, said: “We’ve seen self-esteem and confidence grow, people developing social skills and the feedback we get from the young people, as well as their teachers, is really positive.”

Mat Oakley, Assistant Head and Director of Key Stage Three at Upton-by-Chester High School, added: “There’s huge pressure on external agencies at present in terms of availability.

“The work that CSCW does is invaluable to be able to come in and work with individuals weekly, becoming familiar with the school and what we do.”

Theresa Rainsford, Head Teacher at Guilden Sutton Church of England Primary School, commented: “It’s another collective worship that I know every week is going to be delivered to a high quality and standard.

“The children are engaged, singing, speaking and taking on the acting roles.

“It’s lovely for the children to hear the same thing that we’re saying on a daily basis, but from other people coming into the school.”

CSCW, alongside almost 50 other community sector organisations, are part of Cheshire West Voluntary Action’s (CWVA) Children, Young People and Families (CYPF) Alliance.

The aim of the CYPF Alliance is to connect community sector organisations working in this area to form a collective voice, as well as offering a key point of contact for partners in the public sector at the same time.

On being part of the CYPF Alliance, Darren Gerrish said: “The alliance has been really helpful for us over the last few years.

“I remember the first time I attended one of the meetings. Just to walk in and be with other community sector organisations with a similar heart to help young people to grow and develop was really encouraging.”

Community sector organisations providing services in this area are welcome to join the CYPF Alliance. Get in touch with Clare Crerand, Strategic Lead for CYPF: clare.crerand@cwva.org.uk.
